I love the look of Carrara Marble and since I am not getting marble countertops in my rented apartment anytime soon, I thought I would try a magnet DIY with it. I have a collection of postcards that I like to show off on my fridge and I needed more magnets to be able to hang them all.

The quarantine is in full effect here in Seattle, but the silver lining is I have plenty of time to make crafts for the blog. I have had this one planned for a couples weeks so all the supplies were ready to go.

Unlike the countertops, you can buy sample sheets of marble tile for very cheap. I got a 1 inch hexagon sheet for just under $10 and it has over 125 tiles on it. For magnets I suggest a 1 inch or 2 inch size. I have a slightly smaller fridge so I went with the 1 inch.

For the paint I got a couple of metallic colors and after trying them out focused on the gold and pink. You don’t have to use metallic paint, really any acrylic paint would do, but I love the shine that metallic gives.

I already had the magnets, tape, paint, sandpaper and the glue so this DIY only cost me $10 total but since I only used 8 tiles of the over one hundred, I think it really only cost me $1! In total this DIY took less than hour and is so easy, it is perfect for doing with kids or while multitasking.

I have so many tiles left for other projects I am trying to decide what my next DIY with these will be. I think coasters and a trivet would be a perfect fit.

Sand Tile

Peel the tiles off the backing and use the sandpaper to get off the leftover bits that are stuck to the sides.

Apply Tape

I ended up deciding to use painters tape but it really depends what look you are going for. Make sure to rub the edges really hard.

Shake Paint

Shake your paint bottle REALLY well. Metallic paint separates while it is sitting so if you squeeze it out you may just get some watery liquid that is glittery.

Paint Your Tile

I did a couple coats and then it let it dry fully before slowly removing the tape. You may have to touch up the edges. Paint a second color if you so choose!

Glue Magnet

Make sure the paint is full dry and put a dollop of glue on the back. Press the magnet down and let it dry for an hour.

I love how simple and classy these turned out. They really show off my postcard collection including this vintage set of the University of North Carolina’s campus (Go Heels)!

I think I might make some more of these and give them to friends since I have such an abundance of tiles. I have a feeling my sister is going to want some. Lately I have had an itching to try gold leaf foil and I think these tiles could be perfect for that instead of using paint.
